PROJECT OVERVIEW

I was an associate product designer in the NBC News digital product design team, involved in a year-long redesign and rebrand of NBCNews.com. Which also included TODAY.com and MSNBC.com.

Along with other designers, we delivered visual and experience design for the vast universe of three brands, while following and establishing the new brand guideline. Aside from communicating with stakeholders, I also worked with developers to build and deliver new changes, and collaborated closely with the research team to create prototypes for user testing.

REDEFINING LOYAL USERS


News consumption behavior has changed quite a lot in the past decade with the rise of social media. Most millenials don’t stick to a certain brand like their parents might have, but rather choose from a couple of news sources as default go-tos. Data and surveys collected in the past three years showed the same behavior in most of the NBC News consumers - whom are mostly college-educated, politically liberal working professionals. To meet the needs and change, we had to redefine internally what a loyal user meant, and design a brand that is up-to-date, as well as a platform that allows for easy access and consumption from different social portals.

DESIGN WORK


The design work was highly collaborative and dynamic. Brainstorming constantly and creating various solutions for internal discussion. We would take on work needed to be done, whether it was brand new or passed on. Sometimes working solo, sometimes partnered with other designers.

The establishment of the design system began before I joined. Starting with the design team creating new brand guidelines for 3 NBC veritcals in 2016: Mach, Better, Think. We then expanded the system to NBC News, TODAY, and MSNBC.

USER TESTING

We ran a roughly 2-4 week user testing cycle in conjunction to our design sprints. As the user testing point person on the design team, I would work out goals based on feedback and discuss direction with our researchers. And collaborate closely with our NBC News editors to create prototypes with realistic content in Principle.

Other use cases for building Principle prototypes were: a) internal presentations with stakeholders, and b) external sales/marketing pitches.






LAUNCH DATE

NBCNews.com launched in mid-2018 and continues to roll out new features.
